Our Compost

Week 1

That everybody has their own recycling and sustainability practices which they undertake to a certain extent. People pitch in, in their own way to help reduce waste or pollution. it only take a bit of time and effort to do your part.

Prediction 

- there will be more worms- they will reproduce 

- waste will crumble down and it will loose volume
- food scraps will deteriorate 

- compost and sand will begin to blend together 

- become a wetter consistency 

Observation 

Week 3 

• earth worms formed mud balls on the surface 
• you could see the travel paths through the sand where the worms had moved 
• a seed from the food scraps has made its way to the surface 

  

Week 4 

• compost dried up
• no sight of the worms
• possibility that the worms died as there is no sight of them
• could have been from not enough moisture 
• movement from bugs 

Week 5

no changes seen since week 4, much the same

Week 6

a green sprout was beginning to form out the top of the compost. it was only about 3cm in length. the volume of the compost had decreased. could see by the markings on the side of the pot.

Week 7

the green sprout had grown to approximately 5 cm within a week. the mixture seemed to contain a lot more moisture and condensation on the lid, which caused the mixture to become very wet  

week 8

the sprout began to loose its colour and didn't seem to be growing any further. no change in the texture of the soil. all mixed together as before.

week 9

week 11

The soil was very moist most of the leaves and debris had eroded into the mixture. this might have been with the help of the worms, the amount of rain, sunlight, temperature etc.

some things that i would change or an curious about:

• I have learned that earth worms required enough moisture in order to survive
• they don't move much, but when they do they make small trails as they go 
• i was surprised how little you can see the worms- they don't surface 
• curious as to why the food scraps didn't move or begin to deteriorate 
• Next time i would take out the beetles 
• add more water- so that thee compost doesn't dry out
• monitor the sunlight and shade amount- to maintain the same amount of moisture
